Savour the Southeast was launched in 2012 as a promotional campaign encompassing all the diverse producers within Southeast Alberta. By clustering our local producers we were able to create a marketing strategy that maximized our resources and ultimately enhanced the producers overall exposure.
In 2013, the EDA launched an “Eat Local Week” as a way to showcase local producers, restaurants, and retailers and the local products that they sell. This initiative proved to be such a success this year by demand from local business owners the EDA will be extending the initiative to be a 2 week-long event! Savour the Southeast “Eat Local III” will be held from September 11th to 18th this year.
Savour the Southeast is beneficial for regional business retention and expansion because if every resident in Southeast Alberta spent $10 per week on local product, it would inject approximately $787,000 into the local economy annually.
Restaurants will participate by offering one or more dishes on their menu prepared with local ingredients at a discounted price established at each restaurant’s discretion. To ensure we are highlighting the local producer’s we ask that each restaurant acknowledge where those particular local products came from. This “Savour Special” item/s should be offered for the duration of the Eat Local II Weeks.
Grocers/Retailers will participate by offering a discount on selected local products so consumers can select these items and make their locally grown meals at home. The number of items offered and respective discount would also be at the grocers/retailers discretion. Again, the discounted “Savour Specials” will need to be offered for the duration of the initiative.
The EDA will combine all of the participant’s “Specials” and from that contrive a “guide to local cuisine” which is how consumers will be able to find discounted prices on the “Region’s Top Gourmet Destinations”.
Some of the many incentives to participate include traditional and social media marketing, usage of the logo in the guide to local cuisine, potential increased customer traffic and local press promotions just to name a few.
The Savour the Southeast brand is continuously evolving and as the initiative progresses so does the awareness for Southeast Alberta’s local producers.
If you are interested in participating in this initiative please contact the EDA.
